Care, Support and Guidance at Thomas Alleyne’s High School.
Thomas Alleyne’s High School has a strong, established pastoral system. This is led by Mrs E Young, Assistant Headteacher, with responsibility for Student Wellbeing.
Students are welcomed into Year 9 with a Form Tutor who spends the first part of every day with them. This supports and helps them to prepare for the day ahead. In turn, all tutor groups are then organised into the four Houses, Elkes, Orme, Torrance and Whitmore.
Students have the opportunity to represent their House and contribute towards its success in a rich variety of on-going House competitions. Students are also actively encouraged to take advantage of the wide ranging extra-curricular opportunities that the school offers.
Thomas Alleyne’s puts a high value on good discipline that enables all students to achieve their best. We celebrate this success throughout the school year in our House assemblies and endeavour to prepare our students for the next steps in their educational journey.
Whitmore House
Welcome to Whitmore House! The house is named after one of the former governors of the school, Mrs Dorothy Whitmore. She was previously the Chair of Governors at Uttoxeter Girls’ High School when it merged with Alleyne’s Grammar School (for boys) in 1964. The Whitmore name comes from Dorothy’s husband, who was Frederick Whitmore. Frederick was born in London, the son of the headmaster of Licenced Victuallers School in Kennington. After qualifying at Oxford, he joined Denstone College as an English teacher around 1908.
TORRANCE HOUSE
Welcome to Torrance House! The house gets its name from a local author named William Grove Torrance who published a book called "The History of Alleyne's Grammar School, 1558-1958". W G Torrance was a pupil, then a teacher and then a governor at the school. Our house colour for Torrance is blue, and you will be able to spot a Torrance student by seeing them wearing their blue tie with pride!
Orme House
Welcome to Orme House! The origin of the name 'Orme' dates back to the 1870's when 'George Orme and Sons Ltd' opened trading as drapers and gentlemen outfitters on Uttoxeter High Street. Though George Orme and Sons Ltd finished trading in the early 1980's I am pleased that this part of Uttoxeter’s history continues in some small part here at Thomas Alleyne’s.
Orme students often show the integrity, resilience and empathy that are so vital to success within the classroom and around the school. The philosophy in Orme House is to ensure we recognise and celebrate all types of success, be this a national award or overcoming a personal challenge.
We have demonstrated excellence over the past three years, which has resulted in us winning the house trophy!
Elkes House
The Elkes family name has been linked to Uttoxeter since the early 1900s as a local business grew from a small sweetshop to what is now Fox's biscuits. Our team of staff is proud to support Elkes students in their time with us. We are very lucky to have an excellent group of experienced tutors, who work to ensure that students from all houses are able to access support in school.
Our students are committed and enthusiastic, and our attendance and participation levels are very positive, across all three years.
“Opportunity, Progress and Individuality.”
