Year 12 Introduction + Course Information

1) Lessons and staffing.

There are 2 DT groups in September. You will have 9 lessons over the fortnight, sometimes with two lessons a day. Lessons will be a mixture of coursework and theory lessons throughout the year. See the year overview sheet for dates and deadlines. You must keep this sheet in your folder.

2) Organisation

To be successful at A level you need to be ORGANISED. All you will need is a small A4 folder for your DT work in which you keep your theory notes and an A3 folder to keep your design work in. Be warned - too many people last year used A4 pads in which they wrote all the notes for all their subjects which then mixed up or lost. Please keep subject notes separately!

3) Content

This is a brand new 2 year, linear course with one coursework project done across the two years with one exam at the end of Y13. It is completely different to the course that our current Y12 are doing. We will start Y12 with materials and practical skills theory based on 2 minor projects which do not count towards your coursework mark, but will teach you all the design and making skills needed. These projects are to further develop your skills and confidence using a wider range of tools, materials and equipment not previously used in lower school including the bandsaw, laser cutter, 3D printer etc. The first project will be to design and prototype a virtual reality headset and you will complete the preparation work (research and designs) for this during the bridging project. This will mean starting Y12 with product development, modelling and practical based work.

Details of the course breakdown are as follows:

Component 1: Principles of Design and Technology – theory taught across the 2 years for use in coursework annotation and the final exam

Component 2: Independent Design and Make Project – a coursework project similar to GCSE where you design, develop, make and test a product of your choice

Component 1 – Theory lessons over the 2 years with exam at the end

Component 2 – Coursework project
